Resist Not Evil: Living According to Christ’s Teaching

“But I tell you, do not resist an evil person.” — Matthew 5:39

One of the most challenging teachings of Jesus is His command to resist not evil. This instruction goes against human nature. Our natural instinct is to defend ourselves, to fight back, and to protect our pride. But Jesus calls His followers to live differently.

This message reveals what it truly means to live as a follower of Christ in a world filled with injustice, offense, and opposition.

Jesus Calls Us to Live Differently From the World

The world teaches retaliation. It teaches defending your honor and responding to wrong with more force. But Jesus teaches surrender, humility, and trust in God.

When Jesus said not to resist an evil person, He was teaching us to trust God as our defender. He was teaching us to let go of pride and to live in obedience to Him.

This does not mean evil is good. It means we trust God’s justice instead of taking matters into our own hands.

As followers of Christ, our response must reflect Him—not the world.

True Strength Is Found in Obedience

Choosing not to resist evil requires faith. It requires trusting that God sees everything and that He will judge righteously.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this perfectly. He was falsely accused, mocked, beaten, and crucified. Yet He did not retaliate. He submitted Himself fully to the will of the Father.

This is the example He calls us to follow.

True strength is not found in fighting back. It is found in obedience to God.

Letting Go of Pride and Trusting God

Much of our desire to resist evil comes from pride and self-protection. We want control. We want justice on our terms.

But following Christ means surrendering control.

It means trusting that God is sovereign. It means believing that He will bring justice in His time.

When we release our need to defend ourselves, we demonstrate our trust in Him.

This is the heart of true faith.

Living as True Followers of Christ

To live according to Christ’s teaching means:

  • Responding with humility instead of pride
  • Trusting God instead of relying on yourself
  • Obeying Scripture even when it is difficult
  • Reflecting Christ in your actions

This kind of life stands out in a world that values power and control.

It reveals a faith that is real.
